Pathways

“If one has never known the presence of something, then how would one know its absence, absence would mean nothing” - Ranchhod Soni, blind since birth and a teacher at the Blind Peoples Association, Ahmedabad, India.

Pathways seeks to assign a word to describe the alternate realities and path to perception for people with blindness or mental health conditions. Capturing the open expressions and emotions of joy, wonder, affection, inquiry, isolation and beauty are the central themes explored in these images I shot during a period living in India and working with the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad. This body of work from 2012 is further expanded upon in the book Departures.

I am most grateful to Mr Soni, the BPA, the BM Institute of Mental Health and the Andh Kanya Prakash Gruh School for Girls with Blindness for welcoming me into their worlds. For information on donations to these institutions please click on the links.
